A century-old waterfront property on one of the most coveted stretches of Miami is poised for a new owner and a new era.
BY JEAN NAYAR
When William and Mary Brickell began acquiring vast swaths of waterfront land in Miami in the early 1870s and shortly thereafter built a winter mansion for themselves at Brickell Point, they could hardly have imagined the scope of luxury condos and commercial skyscrapers that have since evolved in their namesake neighborhood, now at the heart of the city’s financial district. But they surely foresaw the attraction of waterfront property along the crystalline waters of Biscayne Bay. Indeed, once Mary began selling off parcels along Brickell Avenue, the couple’s affluent peers from the Northeast began building their own winter mansions, and the avenue soon became known as Millionaire’s Row.
Among the few remaining homes built here during those early years is a charming dwelling at 1349 Brickell Avenue that was constructed in 1920 and has just come to market for the first time in roughly a century. Acquired not long after it was built and owned by the same family for several generations, the property now presents a rare opportunity for a contemporary purchaser to join a very exclusive group of neighbors in this cherished part of Miami.
“With its original staircase, pine floors, jalousie windows, and high ceilings, the home has been well-loved and beautifully maintained over the years,” says Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices EWM Realty broker and senior vice president Ashley Cusack, who holds the $110 million listing. “Yet, as just one of the six remaining historic mansions on the Millionaire’s Row, its exclusive location high on a ridge with one of the prettiest views of the Bay in all of Miami is what really sets it apart.”
Situated just a few blocks to the north of Vizcaya, the vast former estate and gardens of the Gilded Age industrialist James Deering, now a historic landmark and museum, the 5,700-square-foot, seven-bedroom dwelling has the potential to be expanded or completely rebuilt by a new owner as a multigenerational home for a new century. “In the past, many affluent buyers looked to Miami Beach as the location for their vacation homes, but today, with so many entrepreneurs moving their businesses to Miami, a lot of newcomers—many interested in primary dwellings—find it advantageous to live close to downtown and also near the quaint charm of Coconut Grove.”

Perched on 1.6 acres of land with trees on either side, 170 feet along the water, and expansive unobstructed views to the Bay, the setting is also ideal for those seeking seclusion. “There’s a small dock on the Bay, which is a perfect spot for watching dolphins and spotted rays,” says Cusack. “And since large cruise ships and party boats aren’t permitted along this stretch of the Bay, no one will ever be looking in on your backyard, so you can enjoy the peace and beauty of the location in complete privacy.” Indeed, it’s a setting made to order for a 21st-century visionary or trailblazing captain of industry of Miami’s next golden age.
