LONG BEFORE “WELLNESS” BECAME A BRANDING EXERCISE AND LOUNGEWEAR TURNED INTO A SOCIAL UNIFORM, EBERJEY WAS QUIETLY BUILDING A WORLD AROUND THE LUXURY OF FEELING AT EASE.
BY CHIARA ELBAZ
Co-founder Ali Mejia transformed instinct into an empire, creating pieces that blurred the line between intimacy and fashion while proving that comfort, when done correctly, can become its own form of aspiration. Now, with the release of her children’s book The Butterfly Studio, Mejia turns her attention to another kind of softness: the beauty tucked inside everyday moments.
THE BEGINNING
I think I was always meant to be an entrepreneur. At the time, I was working in finance in New York, and I felt completely disconnected from myself. I knew I wanted something more creative, more expressive, something that felt like me. I’ve always said I dreamt up Eberjey because, in many ways, I did. It came from a desire to create something softer, more intuitive, and more emotionally connected.
ON COMFORT
Honestly, we were talking about comfort long before it became a trend. In the ’90s, lingerie was very much about push-up, performance, and perfection. What I felt was missing was something softer, more feminine, and more real. We wanted to create pieces that felt good on your body, that moved with you, that didn’t ask you to be anything other than yourself.
WHY MIAMI?
Miami is home. Miami is home. My co-founder, Mariela Rovito, and I both grew up here. It’s where we met, so starting a business here felt natural. The Miami lifestyle definitely influenced the brand. There’s an ease here, a warmth, a way of living that seeps into how we think about comfort and softness.”
